Crowns

If your tooth has been damaged by cracking or cavities, our dentist at DePaoli Dentistry may recommend a dental crown to restore it. Crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth, protecting it against further damage while also returning it to a normal and natural appearance and function. Dental crowns are sometimes necessary when a dental filling will not suffice or when a tooth is not the proper shape. The crown covers, protects and restores the tooth’s shape. The crowns provided by DePaoli Dentistry enhance tooth strength, beauty and longevity.

Crowns are commonly used to protected damaged or decayed teeth. Crowns can also be used to secure dental bridges in place, cover misshapen teeth, conceal discolored teeth, safeguard a dental implant or cover a tooth that has undergone a root canal.

Dental crowns are typically added in two appointments. The first appointment involves analyzing the tooth and preparing it for the addition of the crown. The dentist takes x-rays of the tooth and nearby bone. The tooth will be slightly filed down to accommodate the crown. The tooth impression is then made with a specialized paste. The impression of the tooth above the crown is also taken to ensure it fits properly with the bite. The impression is provided to the lab to make the crown.

A temporary crown is worn in the ensuing three weeks. The next appointment is centered on replacing the temporary crown with the crown made in the lab. If necessary, a numbing agent will be applied so you are perfectly comfortable as the crown is put into position.
