Forensic dentistry is a branch of forensic science that deals with the teeth.
This branch of forensics is most frequently used in identification of remains of a deceased individual and pattern injuries. Forensic dentistry has played a major role in identifying victims of mass fatality incidents, including natural disasters, transportation accidents and terrorist attacks. Pattern injury analysis, which may include bite mark analysis, aids in determining if an injury was caused by teeth. Forensic dentists may also be asked to provide expert testimony in legal settings.
As a forensic consultant, Dr. DePaoli works to identify human remains that cannot be identified using facial recognition, fingerprints or other means of identification. This includes postmortem dental examinations, review of antemortem (before death) dental records, including x-rays and comparison of antemortem records to the postmortem records and determining either a positive or negative identification.
Dr. DePaoli has also co-authored a chapter on Forensic Dentistry in the book Multidisciplinary Medico-Legal Death Investigation: Role of Consultants (set for publication June 2018).
